Police appealing for witnesses after fatal motorcycle crash in Birtley

POLICE are appealing for witnesses following a fatal motorcycle collision in Birtley yesterday.

Shortly after 4.40pm, Northumbria Police received a report of an incident involving a motorbike and a pedestrian on Portobello Road, just a stone’s throw from Washington.

Police and emergency services attended the scene but sadly the rider of the motorbike, a 22-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family are currently being supported by specialist officers at this time.

The 41-year-old pedestrian was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation is still at an early stage and police have already carried out a number of enquiries but are now appealing for anyone who was in the area at that time to contact thr forcr if they can offer any information that would assist.

Police would especially like to hear from any drivers that were travelling on Portobello Road at that time and may have dashcam footage, so that they can establish the circumstances of the collision.
