RESIDENTS URGED TO STAY SAFE THIS BONFIRE NIGHT

WASHINGTON residents are being advised to keep their families and Neighbourhoods safe this Bonfire Night.

Sunderland Council is working with Gentoo, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police to urge everyone to stay safe and keep celebrations respectful and enjoyable for everyone.

Bonfires are not permitted on land owned by the City Council or Gentoo and unlit fires should be reported immediately – and no fires should be built or lit on private land without the landowner’s permission.

Residents are being asked not to leave waste of flammable materials to collect in gardens or outside homes in case these are used to build fires and everyone is asked not to leave bins out overnight for collection.

The City Council is also urging anyone buying fireworks to only purchase from licenced retailers and keep pets indoors.

“We want everyone to enjoy Bonfire Night safely, and that means working together to prevent unregulated fires, reduce anti-social behaviour, and protect our communities. We’re asking residents to follow the guidance, report any concerns, and help us make this season safe and enjoyable for all,” said Coun Kelly Chequer, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Safer Communities.

Paul Russell, Area Manager for Community Safety at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, added: “Even a small fire can quickly get out of control, putting people at serious risk and causing damage to property and the environment.

“Every year, our crews attend thousands of deliberate fires, which place additional pressure on emergency services – a fire appliance can’t be in two places at once.

“We always encourage people to attend organised displays. These events are professionally managed and reduce the risks linked to home fireworks and unregulated bonfires.

“By following safety advice and reporting any concerns early, residents can help us protect communities and ensure everyone stays safe.”
