BOWES Railway Museum will bring the flag down on a series of historic talks by welcoming Washington historian and author Peter Welsh to take the floor next week.
To celebrate its bicentenary, the Springwell Village museum has hosted a selection of historic talks throughout 2026.
And the series will draw to a close next Tuesday, October 27, when Peter Welsh gives an illustrated presentation exploring the people and events of Springwell during both World Wars.
Peter taught history in Sunderland for 37 years and after retiring continued researching local history – and with the Wessington U3A War Memorials Group, was the man behind securing the funding for the bronze resin poppies installed on houses across Washington where a first World War soldier lived.
He has also written two books about Washington during both wars, which each explore Springwell’s wartime history, telling the stories of local men and women who served and lost their lives.
Tuesday’s talk will start at 10.30am and run until 12.30pm and admission is free with tea, coffee and biscuits. No booking required, just turn up at 10.30am
