A NUMBER of questions raised by residents regarding the proposed Metro to Washington extension have been answered in response to recent public engagement sessions
Metro operator Nexus has today confirmed it has updated the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of the Metro to Washington website in response to points raised – along with explaining the next steps of the scheme.
In September, Nexus revealed ambitious plans to finally bring the Metro to Washington, presenting a proposed route along with locations for two new stations, with one at Sulgrave (Washington North) and another close to Team Farm and Columbia (Washington South).
Part of a 13km extension, the new Washington stations will link existing stations at Pelaw and South Hylton, with the iconic Victoria Viaduct reopened to allow the trains to cross the River Wear.
Nexus invited residents from across the region to a series of public drop-in engagement sessions throughout September, where people could take a closer look at the plans and leave their own feedback.
More than 1400 members of the public attended the sessions, with more than 600 feedback forms submitted, with feedback still being analysed and collected.
But in response to many questions raised, Nexus has now updated the website to answer many of the common questions and themes raised by residents during the drop-ins.
These address queries about parking at the proposed stations, why it won’t be going to The Galleries and how many people are estimated to use the route, along with the expected impact on the environment and wildlife.

The website update also reveals the next steps of the scheme, which involves finalising the Online Business Case and then submitting this to the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority, set to happen next Spring.
Under the current plans, construction is not set to begin until 2030 with hopes to have trains running by 2033.
