BROWNIES, Guides and Rangers from across Washington had the chance to make new friends and memories over the summer, thanks to the efforts of local fundraisers, businesses, organisations and volunteers.
More than 90 Washington Girlguiding members enjoyed an action-packed weekend of adventure, friendship and fun at PGL Newby Wiske, giving them the opportunity to try new challenges and make friends.
Members of the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 11th and 12th Washington Brownies, Guides and Rangers were joined by adult volunteers as they tried a host of new outdoor experiences, learnt new skills and gained new confidence.
The weekend was made possible thanks to a huge fundraising effort and support from Sunderland Council’s Community Chest grant scheme along with various local businesses, organisations and volunteers.
“It was fantastic to see more than 90 of our girls, young members and volunteers coming together for such a brilliant weekend,” said a spokesperson for the Washington units.
“There was an amazing atmosphere throughout, and it was wonderful to see the girls supporting and encouraging one another, trying new things and having fun.
“We are incredibly grateful to Sunderland Council through the Community Chest scheme and to all of the local businesses and organisations that supported our fundraising.
“The generosity of our local community helped make this weekend possible and gave our girls the chance to enjoy experiences they may not otherwise have had.
“A huge thank you goes to Dark Arts Tattoo Studio, Diggerland, Washington Wetlands and everyone else who donated, supported our fundraising or helped spread the word. It really shows what can be achieved when a community comes together to support its young people.”
The weekend also highlighted the importance of volunteering and the role local Girlguiding volunteers play in creating opportunities for girls and young women in the community.
